[00:00:37] Speaker B: This morning. Andrew is going to wrap up the short series about the Holy Spirit and I know that it'll be a great message focused on what happens when all of us, individually and collectively live and walk in the Spirit.
Before we get into that, our worship service even more, I want to give go ahead and say a prayer for us. There's a lot of families that are hurting, a lot of families going through a lot of, a lot of very, very tough things right now. And I want to pray for our church as we worship together, as we have those things on our minds of people that are going through a lot and talk to God together. So let's pray.
Father, you are an awesome God. And we're here this morning because of that, because of you. And, and we thank you for the grace and mercy that you have given us, that you've provided your spirit for us. You have provided a way to be back with you through Jesus and the salvation that we get through him. God, we're so thankful for your love and the way that you have shown that to us.
God, we're thankful to be a part of a big church family. But being part of that means that there are people here that are hurting, that are going through a lot of different situations that cause pain and suffering, God, because of loss, because of different diagnoses with very serious illnesses, disease, God, and we pray that you will, your hand will be in all those situations that these families and these individuals, they will feel your love, they will feel your care and that you will be the great physician that you are in situations where that's needed. You will be the great comforter that you are in situations where that's needed, God, and that we will see your presence, see you working in our church family's life. God, God, thank you so much for blessing us here. God, thank you for the way that this church family continues to grow and help us to be an active part of reaching out to our community and seeing you and showing your love throughout this area. God, thank you so much for Jesus. As we worship you this morning, we pray that we worship you in spirit and in truth. It's through Christ we pray. Amen.
[00:03:10] Speaker C: I had a completely different introduction planned for this morning, but if you heard Jordan's introduction today or you've noticed on our family news, and by the way, if you're a guest here with us or maybe you're tuning in online, we've had a very difficult week here at Madison with the loss of several people that we love.
We've had people that have received some very difficult diagnoses and we've had several people too, that have received some difficult news when it comes to their work.
And I know coming together to worship doesn't eliminate any of the things that happen, but at the same time, I am so grateful that in the middle of our hurt and the heartache that we feel that we have the opportunity to come together in worship and hear a message of hope.
But I also was thinking about this morning how what some people call irony, I call providence.
That of all the times that we could have a series on the Holy Spirit, I do think it's a gift from God that we get to do this right now.
You know, just to hear like we have from Brandon and Jace just in the past few weeks, the fact that there's moments where we start a prayer, we're like, dear God. And we don't really know what to say next. But Paul reminded us in the Book of Romans that the Holy Spirit takes those hurts, those heartaches, those grievings that are too deep for words and gives them to God.
I'm so grateful for that.
But also I've been thinking a lot about the text that we're looking at and we have looked at and there's just this common theme that keeps coming up, and you've probably noticed it too, that in order for us to all take part in and to enjoy the power that is the Holy Spirit, it also requires something of us that is very difficult, especially today.
And it's this to be dependent.
We live in a culture in a time, no doubt, that is very self sufficient, self driven, we operate more out of willpower, even as Christians sometimes, than the Spirit's power.
And it kind of reminds me, I don't know if any of y' all can relate to this. When I put on Christ in baptism, I was 13 years old and I remember my dad baptized me we went down into the water, we came out of the water and he put that towel around me and he said what any dad's probably gonna say, Son, I'm so proud of you.
But then he said something at that time, I was like, really? That's what you're gonna say after this awesome moment? This is what my dad said.
He said, son, I want you to understand that you are not gonna be perfect.
You're gonna have to learn to depend on God.
I'm like, really?
Right after that, you just gonna let me know I'm gonna mess up.
And at the time I didn't appreciate what he said. Now I do.
And I just want to tell you guys, I'm not trying to brag, but for like 30 minutes I did really, really good.
I thought no bad thoughts had had, no evil actions that followed. But after that 30 minutes, the bad thoughts popped in my mind and the actions followed.
And so it's true, I did got this for about 30 minutes, but after that I definitely didn't.
And since that time, and maybe you feel this way too, that dependence is something that we must continue to learn.
It doesn't come natural.
And as we're going to talk about today, I believe that one of the things that Satan wants to do is to create a group of people that are very self sufficient, self reliant and not spirit led.
And so maybe you were kind of like me, I grew up, I was like, well, I have God, I have Jesus.
Why in the world would I need the Holy Spirit?
Well, let me go ahead and tell you. One of the reasons is because Jesus said you do.
I mean, it's not my words.
You might remember John 13 through 17, which encompasses these verses we've been talking about the past few weeks where Jesus said, listen, I'm sending you a helper.
I'm sending you a comforter. He's going to be with you, he's going to help you. He's going to convict you with your sin, he's going to convict you in righteousness.
But it's important to understand the context of him letting us know that we have the Holy Spirit. Here's the context.
John 13:17, where we find these very verses is Jesus last will and testament.
He's telling his disciples about the world that they're about to walk into. That's going to be difficult, it's going to have heartache, it's going to have challenges.
And what he's saying is, I see a world right now that you do not see. And what I'm letting you know is you can't do it when you. Without the helper, without the comforter.
And y' all know I'm a visual learner, so I kind of see it like this. I don't know if y' all remember this from the Olympics. It's called the men's eight rowing.
And you've got these eight guys that are all on this boat that are about the same size. They're absolutely ripped.
But at the very front of the boat, there's this guy that sees what they cannot see. He's actually not physically that impressive of a guy, but what he does is he has this little microphone. Old school days, I think they had a drum.
And he'll speak into that microphone, making a sound like this, ta, ta, ta, ta. And the moment he makes that sound, the paddles are supposed to hit the water.
But what he'll also do is say, like, two left, two right to let them know where to go.
And even though these guys are really strong, and if you ask them if they had a lot of willpower, they would say, oh, you bet. And it's amazing that even these guys that are incredibly strong men understand that they have to respond to the man at the head of the boat because, see, he sees a world that they don't see.
And that's exactly what Jesus is saying here.
But what's amazing is it's even deeper than that. You get to the book of Galatians and the book of Romans, and I think it's amazing that of all the ways that Paul could describe what we have when we receive the Holy Spirit, he picks adoption.
And to us, that may not mean a lot, but to the Greco Roman world, it meant several things. Because in this world, you were either a slave or you were a son.
And if you went from slave to son and you were adopted, here's what's neat. You didn't just get a new title, like a new name. You actually received everything from that family.
You got all of what they have.
And here's what's neat, is you think, well, how does that help me in my constant struggles to sometimes fall back into sin? Well, I pointed out here, look in Galatians 4, when he says this in verse 9, but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, so notice what's happening here. He says, not only are you knowing him, but he's knowing you.
Like, why would you turn back to those weak and worthless things?
You were slaves to those.
So he's describing the battle that we all have that tendency at times to go back to the things that we know are hurting us, that are challenging us. And here's what he says that helps us.
The Spirit.
He says, see, because you're sons, God has sent the spirit of his son into your hearts.
Crying abba Father. That is one of the most intimate terms that anybody can be described of in scripture.
He says, so you are no longer a slave, but you're a son. And if a son, then you're an heir through God. And look what Paul said in Romans. And by the way, if you want to be a son of God, if you want to be a daughter of God, then be led by the Spirit of God. He says, for all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you didn't receive spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.
Do you think sometimes that Satan tries to capitalize on our hearts by getting us to buy into a spirit of slavery?
That if I just do enough good things and outweigh the bad, then God will love me?
But here he's saying, nuh. What I'm letting you understand is it actually works the opposite way.
That just as Jesus experienced, right. Remember at his baptism when heaven opened up and he says, that's my son. And I'm well pleased. I'm telling y', all, heavens are opening up when we make that decision too. He's saying, we have that same thing. You have received the spirit of adoption as sons. And we cry abba Father. And here's what happens when you have that dilemma, when you think, well, because I've struggled with this sin and I'm going to keep on struggling with it. That's just who I am. God says, uh, the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit. We are children of God. The Spirit is telling you and reminding you that you are children of God.
But here's the other reason why it's so important is just to know that you and I don't have to fight battles alone.
Last week, Brandon did an awesome job of showing us in Ephesians 6 that right now we are in a spiritual battle. And by the way, isn't it good to just be reminded of that? Because sometimes it's easy to think of other people or things in the world is the enemy when the reality is Satan is the enemy.
And so in that, Brandon talked about how we have the armor of God. But you know what led up to that? In Galatians 5, in verse 18, this is what Paul says, do not be drunk with wine. But be filled with the spirit.
The context of the armor of God is the spirit of God. And what you'll notice about that word field, it's a different Greek word in the fact that it doesn't mean that you receive more of the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word there for being filled with the spirit actually means that you let the Holy Spirit have more control.
He's more present.
And here's why that's an important thing to know that you're not alone in a battle is that whenever we feel like we're alone in something, have you noticed that we tend to think that each other is the enemy?
Or we might fight with each other. It's kind of like the movie Hunger Games.
And if you've never watched it or read the books, I'm about to spoil the whole thing for you.
So in the movie, in the books, what happens is there's these groups of people that are put in this arena, and the last person standing wins. They have all these weapons and everything they're thrown in there. And what happens is, in the beginning, they think each other is the enemy.
They feel like they're fighting a battle alone. Again, when you fight battles alone, you always think everybody's the enemy. You're always living in a state of suspicion and wonder. And. And what then happens? As the movie progresses, they start to understand, wait, each other is not the enemy.
The system is the enemy. And when they understand that the system's the enemy, then what do they do?
They don't fight against each other. They fight together against that system.
And so I love this quote to kind of remind us if we've ever thought, well, I've got God, I have Jesus. Why would I need the Holy Spirit? Why is this worth talking about? And I love when it said this. If I were Satan and one of my ultimate goals was to thwart God's kingdom and purposes, one of my main strategies would be to get the churchgoers to ignore the Holy Spirit.
So what would happen if every single one of us in this room made a decision in our lives to walk in step, as Galatians 5 talks about, with the Spirit?
What would that look like I shared with you guys? Before that, when I was in fifth grade at aca, we had to be in the chorus. It wasn't something in school like you got to volunteer for in fifth grade. You had to. And so Ms. Atkinson was our chorus director, and we were cute, but we didn't sound good. Okay. We were like, you know, all a bunch of Billy Gilmans, where Our voices were really high pitched, almost puberty, so it wasn't very good.
But I remember she would get us going because we would always get ready for, you know, that performance we would do for our grandparents or, you know, the Veterans Day, things like that. And I remember Ms. Atkinson, our fifth grade course teacher, would get us going and get us started. We could start songs well, but we couldn't keep a beat.
And so what she brought in the room was this thing. It's called a metronome.
And a metronome, if you don't know what it is, it's something that keeps a beat kind of softly, but you hear it in the background. And here's what was amazing. This group of people that some of us had good singing voices, some of us didn't. Some of us had a singing background, some of us didn't. All these people from all these different places could sing, like, one thing because we had something outside of us to keep us in rhythm.
And that's what Jesus is saying when he says, listen, it's good that I'm leaving.
I'm sending you the Spirit.
And I've even asked young people, but I have to ask myself, when I do, like, Bible studies with them, I ask them, I said, listen, would you rather have Jesus right here or here? You know what they say here?
And I say, well, why?
And they say, well, Mr. Andrew, when I go to school, he'll be with me. That's right.
And when I go to the basketball court, he's with me. I was like, that's right.
And so what would it look like for a group of people to keep in rhythm with the Spirit? And maybe you're here today and you're thinking, listen, my challenge for me is I don't feel in step at times with the Spirit. I don't feel in rhythm with him. And if you feel that way this morning, please understand you're not alone.
In fact, I came across this chapter this week, and it was really one of those that I think we could all relate to, Psalm 88, where the Psalmist says this. He said, lord, hear my cry, hear my plea, hear my sigh. And I was like, man, I've done some of those. Maybe you've cried some prayers.
Maybe. Have you ever sighed a prayer? It's like, dear God, whoo.
You know, and like, here, Holy Spirit, I need you to take that. You know what the woo is about, you know.
But then he then starts to talk about it's not just inside, but like there's all these other things in My life the enemy and.
And the challenges I face. There's all these obstacles.
We all go through periods of time where we feel out of rhythm. And so what I'm saying is, as we're going to look at in just a second, the Holy Spirit is the answer to the chaos that's in our life.
It's only when we walk with him that we can keep in step with Him. And so you might be thinking, well, for me, what is it then? Maybe that has caused me to. To get out of rhythm.
Well, maybe for some of us, and I know this is for me, and I'm about to step on my toes, maybe for some of us, the reason why we don't think we need the Spirit is because our lives are just a little bit too comfortable.
I love what Brandon shared last week when he said that one of the difficulties of speaking about the Holy Spirit is also in the receiving of it. When you teach it yourself. And it's this, that maybe we're a little nervous about the transformation that might happen, that it might require me to be a little bit more obedient to transform the order of the priority of certain things in my life.
And I think about this verse because have you ever had this kind of dilemma? You're like, listen, I wanna talk to this person about Christ, or I wanna have this conversation, or I wanna maybe teach and I taught before or whatever it is. And we're kind of nervous about doing that, but we decide not to do it. Here's what he says. When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers, he's preparing them for what's to come. And the authorities. Do not be anxious.
Don't be anxious about how you're gonna defend yourself or what you're gonna say in that moment. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. I had a lady that came up to me today and she was telling me about this conversation she's wanted to have for years.
She was nervous about it and she finally decided to do it. And she said, I don't even know what I said, but it ended really well. And maybe y' all have had those moments before where you trusted God in that moment. And so if John 14 through 16 keeps calling Jesus the comforter, and yet we feel out of rhythm, maybe one of the reasons why we don't feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit is maybe our lives right now are a little too comfortable.
Because as you go through scripture, what you're going to notice is when men and Women of God, just like we read this morning in Acts 4 and 5, is with their lives on the line, they worship God proclaimed it more to awaken the Spirit in the opportunities that he wants to provide us when we do things that are outside of our comfort zone. Most of scripture is outside of our comfort zone and calling us to places outside of our comfort zone.
Maybe y' all remember in 2007 when there was a group of 23 missionaries from Korea that went over to share the gospel in Afghanistan?
The Taliban got these 23 individuals and killed several of the group.
And so you can imagine being One of these 23 people that were there, and this is that group.
And to know that, you know, this is probably going to happen to me. And they remember being on that cell floor just waiting their death.
And I don't know if y' all have heard any of this, but when they got back, they were on because there was ended up being like, a truce or treaty made, and we got a lot of them out from the Taliban. But do y' all remember the conversation that they had with some of these people?
There was two people in particular they were interviewing, and they asked this one gentleman, they were like, hey, can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to know, like, you're about to die for the gospel? Like, tell us about that experience. And this is what he said.
I have never felt closer to God than I did on that cell floor.
And then y', all, what he said next will blow your mind.
He then looked at his friend that was there with him and he says, hey, man, do you sometimes just want to go back there?
Maybe for some of us, what it is, is the volume of life is too loud.
I'm aware of it with myself, and maybe you probably even noticed it with our kids and the next generation that so much of our life revolves around devices, social media, the noise of news, the noise of the world. And what can happen is we can hear so much of that that it drowns out the very things that we need to hear.
And the answer to the noise that's in our hearts, the chaos that's in our life, is what Paul says here in Galatians 5. If we live by the Spirit, we also have to keep in step with the Spirit. And you'll notice, by the way, all throughout Scripture, that when people want to get back in rhythm with God, you'll notice a theme. They don't just, like, get away to retreat.
They get away with God.
And I'll give you an example. When I Do premarital counseling.
There's two things that I try to challenge couples to do.
One of those is what I call divert daily, which is I want them to pray together as a couple every day. Where they ask each other for requests, say, hey, what can I pray for for you? What can you pray for for me? And they pray together. That is kind of a challenge I give them. Here's the second challenge.
I challenge them every year to do what I call abandon annually. I know it rhymes. I was trying to purposely be cheesy, but abandon annually. And the whole idea behind that is I want them just as a couple. You don't have to spend a lot of money, but to go somewhere overnight for a day or two, just as a couple.
But the book that I share with them, the chapter talks about that when you go on those retreats as a couple, it's not just we got away from everything that he said. The ultimate goal to build up your relationship in your marriage. This speaks of any marriage relationship, especially the one that we have with the bride of Christ.
That the idea of getting away is not about isolation, it's about harmony.
That when we speak of stillness, stillness in scripture never implies being isolated. That when Jesus broke away from the crowd, he went away from the crowd to get in tune with God.
And so maybe for some of us, that's the step we need to take. Maybe part of the reason why we're out of rhythm with God is because our hearts have become hardened man. When Brandon shared last week in Acts chapter seven, when Peter is about to get stoned. And by the way, I think this comment is what got him stoned.
He says, you stiff necked people, you're uncircumcised in heart and ears. And by the way, if you keep reading on down, he says you've even received the law.
But notice what it says.
You always resist the Holy Spirit, as your fathers did.
So do you.
And the danger of that is this, is that once your heart becomes hardened to something, it's then a little bit easier to build up a wall of sin.
I've had some conversations the past few weeks with people that are kind of wondering, well, okay, if I sin, okay, when I sin, does the Holy Spirit just leave me?
Well, Ephesians 4:30 says that when we sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit.
It doesn't say that the Spirit leaves, but we do grieve him.
Isaiah 59, he poses a rhetorical question that I'd love to get your answer on. This is what he says in Isaiah 59. Is God too weak to save us? So let's answer that. Is God too weak to save us?
What do you think?
No.
So what's the problem?
Well, verse two says our sins have separated us from God.
So I'll explain it like this.
If I sin against Lorianne, are we still married?
Yes.
All right. If I sin again, are we still married?
Yes. But each sin is kind of like another brick between us by title, right? We're still what? We're still married.
But because of these bricks of unrepentant sin, our relationship is not what it could be.
So what's the answer?
It's repentance.
And I want you and I to get real with ourselves for just a second.
Is there a sin in your life right now between you and the Father, a brick that you have been putting little and little and little, more by little more between you and the Father that is causing your relationship to not be what it needs to be repented?
Don't make any more excuses.
Don't push it back any further.
Leave it.
And just as those bricks can be built back little by little up, you can take them down little by little. And what's amazing about the power of God and the rescue that we receive from Jesus Christ, it's not like he's like, here, when you do good, I'll remove this brick, you come and you ask for forgiveness of sins. He knocks it all down.
And so maybe you're here today and you've built up a wall of sin.
I encourage you to repent. Maybe for some of us, we just need to be reminded. Hey, I think Satan's wanting me to forget about him. He's wanting me to forget about the Spirit. And so I want to end with this. What would it look like if all of us in this room made the decision to walk with the Spirit? What would that look like?
What would it look like? I don't know how many we have here. 800 something just here this morning at this service.
If 800 and something people all decided to be more dependent upon the Spirit, what would that look like?
Well, I'll tell you this. I know for a fact what happened after these gatherings would really be transformed.
Did y' all notice today, by the way, in the scripture reading, that right after this group of people were told, don't talk about Jesus, they gathered together, they worshiped, and then what did they do?
What did they do? They spoke the word with boldness.
Do you think sometimes, if we're not careful, that our worship assemblies and our Gatherings can just kind of be like, man, that was good.
Man, that was a good song. And, man, I love that message. And sometimes if we're not careful, we can fall more in love with the messenger than the message itself.
Or maybe sometimes what happens is we kind of become like a pep rally without the actual play.
I mean, can you imagine, like, on a Friday, you go to a pep rally at your high school.
You're all dressed up, you're ready to go, you're fired up.
And then after that hooping and hollering, that excitement, the singing, then all of a sudden, you see the players on the field. They get into the huddle, they say, ready, break. And they go sit on the sidelines.
You'd be like, what in the world?
What was all the excitement about?
But, y', all, I'm telling you, if we're not careful, that's us.
That's why we talk so much about what happens on Sunday is supposed to change what we do on Monday.
We can't be pep rally without the play.
I think another thing that would happen for sure is that we would have this constant environment of connection and care. Because, you know, in John 16:8, it says this.
The Holy Spirit will convict you concerning your sin. But you know what it also says? He will also convict you to do righteous things.
Have you ever had a moment where you, like, somebody popped into your mind, you know, I wonder how they're doing.
And you have a choice there. You can either just wonder, or you reach out. You, like, send a text or call them.
Do you remember what it was like when you did that? Like, you actually did something uncomfortable and you reached out to them. You called them.
I know there's been times where people have said things like, who told you? I'm, like. Told me what? Like, I don't know. I'm just.
Just wanting to see how you're doing.
Or they might say, man, I needed to hear this. Did you know that we were going through this?
So I guess my challenge is, is this.
Let's be sons and daughters of God and be led by the spirit of God. And the moment that that somebody pops into your heart, I want you to reach out to them.
But the other thing I think about is this, and I alluded to this at the very beginning this morning, that the beauty of the Holy Spirit is that in the middle of struggles and disappointment, we see struggles and disappointment from the context of hope and joy.
And if you're maybe a new Christian or you're new to the church this morning, and I Wanna explain something I didn't put up that the Holy Spirit in the milieu situation still makes you happy. That's not what that says.
Joy is rooted in Jesus Christ.
Hope is rooted in who God is, not the circumstance.
Because what it says here is the gospel came to you not only in word, but in power and in the Holy Spirit with full conviction. You know what kind of men we prove to be among you for your sake. And we became imitators of us and the Lord. For you received the Word and notice what it says.
In much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Let me say that again.
In much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, there is nothing the world can provide you.
No place that you could ever turn, that in the middle of affliction it could lead you to a place of hope and joy.
So as we process our difficult weeks and we process our difficult times, we process it from the standpoint and with the context of hope and joy that the Holy Spirit provides us.
But the final thing this morning is this, is that when we understand that we have the Holy Spirit will also start to understand that Satan, never each other are the enemy.
In this text, you know, he says, if we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the spirit. I've always kind of just stopped there, but if you keep reading, he gives you what it looks like to be in step with the Spirit.
We don't become conceited.
We don't provoke one another or envy one another. Why? When you have a common opponent, you also have a common unity. It's kind of like if you've been to a sporting event.
Have you noticed how sometimes you make friends with random strangers because you have a common opponent? Like in 2014, this was the time I remember it the most.
Florida State was playing in a really big game. I won't tell you which one is the national championship with Auburn. And at that one, I remember when the kickoff return happened. I don't know how I landed here, but I landed four rows down and me and this random man were jump hugging each other until we realized, you know, we kind of walked away and like, how did I get down here? And you know, we still don't. Couldn't make eye contact after that. But what happened was what brought that together, we had a common opponent. And I think about that from a spiritual perspective.
If we are people that are walking in step with the spirit, we will never see each other as the enemy, but we will see Satan.
We don't wrestle with flesh and blood, Satan is the enemy. And when we understand that Satan is the enemy, we'll have a very common unity. So maybe you're here today and you've never maybe given your life to Jesus Christ. You might think, man, this all sounds good. Remember what it said in Acts 2:38.
Because when Jesus describes that gift, guess who was there? Peter.
Peter heard Jesus say, listen, fathers, if you who are evil and you know how to give good gifts, how much more does a heavenly Father who is perfect know how to give a good gift? You know what he says Next in verse 13?
I'm talking about the Holy Spirit. Peter heard that.
That's why he said in Acts 2:38, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. If you're here this morning and you feel out of rhythm with God, there's a reason you haven't made that decision to give your life to him. And here's the beauty of it. You're not just forgiven of sins, but you're given something so much more.
But I also know that this morning there are people in this room that brick by brick have put a wall right now between them and God.
You know, this is just three bricks.
Mine's just five bricks. Mine's just a brick.
But what I'm telling you right now, your relationship with God is not where it needs to be.
So there's some of you in this room, maybe what you need to do is to repent.
You can walk to one of these exits. We have our shepherds that are there that you can go and pray with them. We had a few that did that this morning. We also think about, we had a man came forward this morning at the 8:30 service and what he basically said was, there's a bunch of bricks right now between God and I.
And then he said this. I feel like I've just got a little too comfortable.
If you're here today and you want to give your life to God to get back in rhythm with Him, I encourage you to do so while we stand and we sing the song together.
